Does my child need braces? 6 signs to look out for

It's one of the most common questions we hear from parents: how do I know if my child needs braces? The truth is, some signs are obvious, while others can be easily missed - especially when baby teeth are still in place or adult teeth are just starting to come through.
At Frankston Orthodontics, we’re here to help you feel informed and confident about your child’s smile. Here are 6 signs that it might be time to book their first orthodontic consultation.
1. Early or late loss of baby teeth
Most children start losing baby teeth around age 6 and have all their adult teeth by 12 or 13. If your child loses their teeth much earlier or later than expected, it could be a sign of underlying crowding, spacing, or eruption issues that may need early intervention.
2. Crowded, crooked, or overlapping teeth
If your child’s teeth appear crowded or crooked - even slightly - this can affect more than just the appearance of their smile. Crowded teeth are harder to clean and can increase the risk of cavities or gum issues later on. Orthodontic treatment helps guide their teeth into the proper position before issues worsen.
3. Difficulties with biting or chewing
If your child complains about discomfort when chewing or frequently bites their cheeks or tongue, this could point to a bite problem (like an overbite, underbite, or crossbite). These bite issues are best addressed while your child’s jaw is still developing.
4. Mouth breathing or noisy breathing at night
Breathing through the mouth, especially during sleep, may indicate a narrow palate or poor jaw alignment. This can contribute to sleep issues, snoring, or speech concerns. Orthodontic expanders or early treatment can help improve both breathing and development.
5. Thumb sucking or prolonged dummy use
Habits like thumb sucking beyond age 4 can put pressure on the front teeth and jaw, leading to protrusion or bite changes. If your child continues these habits after early childhood, it’s worth having their bite assessed before permanent teeth are fully in place.
6. Jaw shifting, clicking, or asymmetry
Do you notice your child’s jaw popping, shifting to one side, or looking uneven when they open and close their mouth? This may be a sign of jaw growth irregularities that should be addressed early to avoid long-term complications.
When should kids see an orthodontist?
The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic check-up by age 7. That doesn’t always mean braces right away - but it does give us the chance to spot early signs of crowding or bite issues and guide their development at the right time.
At Frankston Orthodontics, we offer early intervention treatments like orthodontic expanders, as well as braces and aligners designed just for kids. Starting early can make future treatment easier, quicker, and more effective.
